Ryan Atkins won the second race of the 2021 Spartan US National Series this weekend. Atkins finished the 21-kilometer Beast course with a time of 2:04:38. Joining Atkins on the podium was Rylan Schadegg in second place and Hawk Call in third. Call started the race strong and led early before being passed by Atkins at an obstacle-dense section of the course.
After the race Atkins talked about how the July heat played into his strategy. “I knew if my heart rate went too high I wouldn’t be able to get it back. Going faster in the first 45 minutes would cost dearly in the last hour and fifteen minutes.” He also talked about his effort level throughout the race. “I just kept a steady effort. It dropped a little bit as the race went on, but everyone else fell off huge.”
Finishing in second place was Rylan Schadegg with a time of 2:06:16. After it was over, Schadegg talked about his mindset going into the race. “I had no idea what to expect. I just told myself I was going to race my own race and give God the glory.”
Schadegg became emotional talking about his motivation for the race. “I found out about this kid who is eight, with a brain tumor. He probably has only eight months to live. I thought “This (race) sucks. I feel like I’m going to puke” but it’s nothing compared to that.”
Hawk Call was the third place finisher in 2:07:02. Call talked about competing in front of his father, three-time Spartan World Champion Hobie Call. “It was awesome. (It was a) huge motivation and I definitely wanted to make him proud, which I feel like I did.”
