I’ve tried all different types of powdered protein: whey, casein, pea, and even beef, but one I hadn’t tried before was goat whey protein. I picked up a bottle of Naked Goat to see if this is the next revolution in workout protein or just another one to add to the list.

Ingredients: The first thing I always look for when picking up a new supplement is the list of ingredients. Naked Goat is part of a line of Naked Nutrition’s full line of supplements whose tagline is “nothing to hide”. This is because they are renowned for using so few ingredients that everyone can understand what they are about to consume.

Naked Goat Chocolate has three ingredients, goat whey protein, organic cocoa sugar, and organic cacao powder. That’s it. That’s all the ingredients. The latest addition to their lineup lives up to the brand of putting in the bare minimum amount of ingredients so you know you are maximizing the effective dose.

Nutrition: The next thing I typically look at is the nutrition facts. For every two scoops you get 23g of protein, a solid amount making it good for post-workout, late night snack or just a whey to add protein to a low protein meal. Additionally, you’ll get 1g of saturated fat and 5g of sugar per two scoops.

Convenience: I like this amount of protein because it gives me flexibility. The two scoops means if I’m having it post-workout I’ll use the full amount but if I’m using it to simply add protein to a meal, I might drop to one scoop if my meal already had some protein in it.

Packaging: Not only do their ingredients have “nothing to hide” but their packaging lives up to the name as well. All Naked Nutrition products come in a clear bottle, which means you aren’t buying a giant container at a local supplement store only to find out the container is ½ empty with air. They fill these containers up and you’ll be able to monitor your consumption without having to remove the lid.

Effectiveness: Whey protein is a proven product for recovery. It is the fast acting and provides essential building blocks for muscle recovery. I don’t think I need to go into the effectiveness of whey but just know that there’s a reason it has been a staple of the supplement industry for decades. Naked Goat is another variant of whey, this time from Goat milk. If the science is there, the only thing left is to talk about the taste.

Taste: While I tend to focus more on nutrition and ingredients, most people’s primary concern is taste. Naked Goat Chocolate tastes delicious. If you are ever concerned about the taste of protein, chocolate is usually the flavor to choose because it masks the protein flavor pretty well. As my first foray into Goat Whey protein, this tastes good enough I’m ready to try the Naked Goat Vanilla flavor (check www.OCRbuddy.com for the upcoming review of Vanilla).

I always taste test protein in water. Milk or milk substitutes mask flavor often making almost any protein taste good. However, it is hard to get protein to taste good in plain water. If you want to make it even more challenging, use room or faucet temperature water. Naked Goat Chocolate tastes great despite my best efforts of trying to make it not by using room temperature water.

Overall: Naked Goat Chocolate is an absolute success. If you like the fast-acting efficiency of whey protein but want to try it from a different source with minimal ingredients, Naked Goat is for you. While I’m not ready to replace all my protein with Naked Goat, it is now part of my lineup that I keep in my house. If you missed my review of their Casein, you can check it out here. For their Casein I have switched over exclusively to their brand as my primary bedtime/casein source, read the review to find out why.

For those that are more science based and want the exact amino acid profile, again Naked Nutrition has “nothing to hide”. The label has the amino acid profile so you can get the exact breakdown of everything you are consuming. Naked Nutrition continues to hit home runs with their lineup of minimal ingredient supplements that truly do have nothing to hide. This makes not only Naked Goat Chocolate worth checking out but their full lineup of products at www.NakedNutrition.com and on Amazon.com.
