When looking to get supplements I often like the approach of “less is more”. By that I mean companies will add in propriety blends of various items in their product in an effort to simultaneously convince you that you are getting more while often reducing the amount of effective ingredients. What I love about Naked Nutrition is they go in the complete opposite direction. With that, let’s talk about the first product I ever tried from Naked Nutrition: Naked Casein.
What is Casein? Casein is a slow-digesting protein derived from milk. I’ve been advocating its use for years. I wrote about it in both the first and second versions of my book Strength & Speed’s Guide to Elite OCR. For the last two decades before going to bed at night, I have had some form of casein to provide the ability for my body to continue building muscle all night long.
As someone who doesn’t like cottage cheese, nor want the excess carbs contained in cottage cheese, supplemented casein has been my go-to choice and I’m always on the lookout for something that tastes good but doesn’t come with extra fat, carbohydrates, or calories. Naked Casein has zero grams of carbs, zero grams of fat, and 26 grams of protein. It is pure protein. A pure muscle-building and recovery product to maximize performance.
Initial Impressions: What we need to talk about first is that the containers are clear and full. If you have been around the supplement world for any length of time, you are probably expecting to get a half-empty container and a protein scoop buried somewhere in your powder. I opened the container and found the scoop on top and realistically, they would have had trouble fitting more protein in the container. We were off to a great start. While this may not seem like a big deal to you, I think this says a lot about the honesty and transparency of the company.
What makes Naked Nutrition unique? I’ve used other casein products and they all seem to mix well in water or milk (or in a milk substitute like almond milk). Often the almond milk makes it taste better. What first caught my eye about Naked Nutrition was that I needed more water than normal to mix it and with the size of the cup I normally use, the milk made it too thick. Out of all the casein products I’ve tried, this is the only one I feel confident does what it is supposed to by slowly digesting in your stomach. The thickness of the shake after mixing makes this abundantly clear and will provide muscle-building opportunity all night long. After all, you don’t get stronger in the gym, road, or on the trail, you get stronger by recovering from the stress from those workouts fueled by proper nutrition.
Taste: I got Vanilla and the taste wasn’t crazy delicious, but it wasn’t bad. I thought it just tasted like milk. It wasn’t anything to write home about but the taste confirms that there isn’t a whole bunch of extra garbage in your powder. When your ingredient list is one item, you aren’t going to get anything crazy regarding taste. For me, this is exactly what I was looking for and one of the biggest selling points.
Overall: I’m sold on Naked Nutrition Casein. The container is huge, it is clearly very thick and the ingredients list consists of “casein”. That’s it. It is pure casein. It is exactly what you want if you want to recover or build muscle but don’t want to put on any excess fat. After years of bouncing between brands of Casein, I think I’ve found the solution. I’ve tried one other Naked Nutrition product so far, Naked Protein Coffee with equally amazing reviews. Overall, I’m a big fan of the Naked Nutrition products I’ve tried and where they are taking their line of supplements. I recommend checking out their Casein or any of the other products in their lineup that interest you.
